Communal and Regional Co-operations

Cross-border projects and programs developed together can be implemented and carried out in the most efficient way if the region, municipalities and initiatives are involved locally. Partnerships of towns and villages, co-operation in small regions, cross-border impulse centres activate the potential in new Europe and create cross border areas of identification. Exchange of experience reaches from communal environment services and cultural management up to areas of disaster prevention and social services organised by local administration.

The commission has submitted a draft of regulation on creation of a European Association for Cross-border Co-operation (EVtZ). This instrument serves as an additional optional legal form of cross-border co-operation and should improve the framework conditions for cross-border and trans-national co-operation.

The Weinviertel region is a member of the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) and within an Austrian project of the European Commission (Directorate General for Enlargement) it coordinates a project of regions Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Burgenland and Vienna. Weinviertel also has experience of participating on Europe-wide projects i.e. with Saxony-Anhalt within a cultural and tourism co-operation with the Welun district in Poland or with Baranyi Komitat in South Hungary.

Municipal co-operations are an important component of the Centrope Project. Centrope is an important gateway between Vienna and Lower Austria and the regions around the capital and main regional towns and cities.
