The Region
The EUREGIO Region Weinviertel-South Moravia-West Slovakia, founded in 1997, consists of the districts of Gänserndorf, Hollabrunn, Korneuburg and Mistelbach. In South Moravia there are the border districts of Břeclav, Hodonín, Znojmo and Brno-venkov. In Slovakia the member areas are the self-governing region of Bratislava (Bratislavský kraj) with the district of Malacky and the self-governing region of Trnava (Trnavský kraj) with the districts of Senica and Skalica in the West Slovak Region of Záhorie.
A total of 270 municipalities support the EUREGIO union in three regions inhabited by more than one million people.
The geographical and structural characteristics of the individual areas have a lot in common: a balanced, partially decreasing population development in the border municipalities of the Weinviertel region, the South Moravia and in the northwest of Slovakia is a contrast to the population growth of up to 20% in the regions of Vienna, Brno and Bratislava. The country is characteristic for its rolling hills, extensive basins and riverine areas. Scattered limestone rock cliffs provide dominant landmarks of the countryside and together with the flood plains and the dry sites contribute to the peculiar ecological characteristics of the country. The rivers March/Moravia and Thaya/Dyje form the natural border.
In the area with predominatly agriculatural livelihood traditions the development of economic centres is nowadays encouraged with support of EU programmes and interregional support funds. Common offers in the travel industry can be seen especially in the wine tourism and in the national parks and biosphere areas as well as within the European cultural initiatives.
